How many sheets of drywall?
Total the wall and ceiling area, add about 10% for waste and offcuts, then divide by the sheet area. A 4 × 8 sheet is 32 square feet. A 4 × 12 means fewer joints, but it’s hard to handle alone.
Measure wall by wall, not by the room
Totaling a room’s square footage and dividing by 32 gives you roughly how much board you need. It doesn’t tell you what to order. Drywall comes in fixed lengths (8, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 16 feet) and a sheet either spans a wall or it doesn’t. Measure each wall separately. Sketch how the sheets fall before you buy anything.
A 12 ft wall takes a single 4 x 12 sheet per course and gives you no butt joints at all. A 13 ft 6 in wall takes that same sheet plus an 18 in filler. The butt joint that filler creates is the hardest joint in the trade to hide, because there’s no factory-tapered edge to bed the tape into.
Don’t deduct doors and windows the way you would for paint. A window opening cut out of the middle of a full sheet leaves an offcut nobody can use, and that offcut is what the ten percent waste allowance is there to cover. Deduct only the genuinely large openings (a double patio door, or a wide cased opening on a short wall).
How you cut them matters more than the arithmetic. Hang the board straight over the opening and cut it out afterwards, so no taped seam lands on the corner of a door or window. Seams that line up with opening corners tend to crack as the building moves.
Ceiling height decides the layout. At 8 ft, two horizontal courses of 4 ft board fill the wall and leave one taped seam at mid-height. At 9 ft (increasingly common in newer houses) standard board gives you two courses plus a 12 in rip, so two seams to tape instead of one.
Fifty-four-inch wide board exists for precisely this case. Two courses of 54 in cover 9 ft with a single seam at 4 ft 6 in.
Twelve feet is the length most lumberyards and home centers stock, though manufacturers list it anywhere from 8 ft to 14 ft. Plan the butt joints to land above doors, or above and below windows, where they’re least visible under side light.
Which board goes where
Most walls get half-inch board. It’s sold as Sheetrock in the US and as Gyproc or CGC in Canada, and the weight difference between products decides whether you can hang it single-handed. Lightweight half-inch panels run about 1.25 lb per square foot (roughly 40 lb for a 4 x 8 sheet), while standard half-inch is nearer 50 to 60 lb.
Five-eighths Type X, the fire-rated board, is about 2.2 lb per square foot. Call it 70 lb as a 4 x 8 and a little over 100 lb as a 4 x 12. Reckon on a two-person lift on a wall and a panel lift on a ceiling, and it’s worth knowing that before a pallet lands in the driveway.
Ceilings have their own rules. IRC Table R702.3.5 raises the minimum board thickness wherever a water-based texture is going on. Over framing at 16 in on center it goes from 3/8 in to 1/2 in, and over 24 in centers from 1/2 in to 5/8 in, unless you use 1/2 in sag-resistant ceiling board instead. The same section requires textured ceiling board to run perpendicular to the framing.
Even on an untextured ceiling, half-inch board on 24 in centers will usually sag between joists over a few damp summers. Treat 5/8 in or sag-resistant board as the default overhead.
Moisture-resistant board (the green stuff) handles humidity rather than water. IRC R702.4.2 requires the backer behind wall tile in a tub or shower to be one of the listed materials. Those are glass-mat gypsum backing panel to ASTM C1178, fiber-reinforced gypsum panels to C1278, non-asbestos fiber-cement backer board to C1288, or fiber-mat reinforced cementitious backer units to C1325.
Paper-faced water-resistant board isn’t on that list and doesn’t belong inside the tiled wet area. Outside it, mold-resistant board is a cheap upgrade for a bathroom, a laundry or a basement, and it hangs and finishes just like standard product.
Mud, tape and the finish level you are paying for
Joint compound is the item most people under-order, and the manufacturers publish the estimating figure. ProForm quotes 123 to 140 lb (about 9 gallons) of ready-mix per 1,000 square feet of board. USG quotes roughly 10 gallons for the same area across a standard three-coat job.
In shop terms that’s a shade over two 4.5-gallon (61.7 lb) pails per 1,000 square feet. You can’t buy a fifth of a pail, so buy three, or reckon one pail per 14 to 15 sheets of 4 x 8. Use all-purpose compound for bedding the tape and a lightweight or topping compound for the second and third coats. Lightweight sands with far less effort and makes far less dust.
What you’re buying beyond quantity is finish level, defined by the Gypsum Association in GA-214, which is the reference in Canada as well as the US. Level 4 (joints and fastener heads coated and sanded, bare board face everywhere else) is the residential standard and what nearly every quote silently assumes.
Level 5 adds a skim coat of compound across the entire surface, and it exists for one reason. Compound and the board’s face paper absorb paint at different rates, so under raking light or a glossy paint the taped areas photograph through as visible bands. Specify Level 5 for gloss, semi-gloss or enamel finishes and for walls under skylights or long windows. Budget roughly a quarter to 40 percent more compound, plus an extra day.
Fastening is where DIY jobs quietly fail inspection. IRC Table R702.3.5 sets maximum screw spacing by framing spacing and board layout. For single-ply board on wood framing at 16 in centers it commonly works out at 12 in on center on ceilings and 16 in on walls.
NBC 9.29.5 sets the same 12 in (300 mm) ceiling maximum in Canada. Screws must reach at least 5/8 in into wood framing, which makes 1 1/4 in the right length for half-inch board and 1 5/8 in for five-eighths. The longer screw is worth using on any ceiling for the extra bite.
Set each head just below the paper without tearing it. A torn face has almost no holding power, and the fastener will usually pop.
How much drywall mud for 1000 square feet
Figure on 9 to 10 gallons across all three coats. Call it just over two 4.5 gallon pails (so three on the shelf), or roughly 95 to 125 pounds of ready-mix depending on whether you buy lightweight or conventional. USG rates standard all-purpose compound at 10 gallons per 1,000 square feet of board and lightweight Plus 3 at 9.4. A Level 5 skim coat adds a full-surface pass on top of that. Estimators commonly budget 25 to 40 percent more, though no manufacturer publishes a firm rate for it.
Split roughly 40 percent into the tape coat, 35 into the fill and 25 into the finish, and buy two products rather than one. All-purpose goes on for bedding tape and corner bead, then lightweight or topping for the last two coats, which sands with a fraction of the effort and dust. In sheet terms a 4.5 gallon pail covers 14 to 15 sheets of 4 by 8.
Texture changes everything. An orange peel or knockdown finish is sprayed compound over the whole surface and can double the order. Temperature matters too, since compound won’t dry properly in an unheated room.
How many screws per sheet of drywall
A 4 by 8 wall sheet takes about 28 screws at the IRC minimum. The familiar one-screw-per-square-foot rule of thumb gets its 32 from the same pattern with a buffer built in, so don’t mistake the rule for the code. Ceilings take more because the field spacing tightens from 16 inches to 12 (around 35 on the same sheet). A 4 by 12 wall sheet usually takes about 40.
The count is the same whether you hang the sheet horizontally or vertically (7 studs crossed at 4 screws each, or 4 studs at 7), so hang it whichever way leaves you fewer joints to tape.
Does framing at 24 inches on center save screws? Not really. IRC Table R702.3.5 caps wall screws at 16 inches on center over 16 inch framing but tightens them to 12 inches over 24 inch framing, so you cross fewer studs and put more screws into each one.
Keep every fastener at least 3/8 inch in from the sheet edge (10 mm under NBC 9.29.5 in Canada), where the core still has support. That distance is written into the code rather than folklore. And check the same table’s separate, looser schedule for board set in construction adhesive, which allows 24 inches on center on walls instead of 16. On a big job that’s a real reduction.
How many sheets of drywall in a 2000 sq ft house
Plan on about 220 sheets of 4 by 8, or 145 of 4 by 12. Fine Homebuilding’s estimating shortcut multiplies each story’s living-area floor space by 3.5 for 8 foot ceilings. That puts a 2,000 square foot home at 7,000 square feet of board. Add 10 percent waste and you order roughly 240.
Use 3.82 as the multiplier at 9 foot ceilings (Fine Homebuilding publishes that one too), which takes the same house to 7,640 square feet and about 240 sheets of 4 by 8 before waste. The figure covers walls and ceilings in finished living space, so add the garage separately if it’s getting boarded.
Watch the thickness there. IRC Table R302.6 only requires 1/2 inch on the ordinary garage-to-dwelling separation, but a garage ceiling under habitable rooms has to be 5/8 inch Type X. Canada handles that separation differently. NBC 9.10.9.16 asks for a gas-tight barrier between garage and dwelling rather than a prescribed board thickness, so check your provincial code.
Plan the delivery before the order. Those 240 sheets of standard half-inch come to a little over six tons, which usually means a boom truck placing them room by room rather than a pickup and a weekend. The mud and tape that follow scale off the same 7,000 square feet, not off the sheet count.
4x8 vs 4x12 drywall: which is better?
4 by 12 wins wherever you can handle it. On a 12 foot wall it eliminates butt joints entirely, and the butt joint (no factory taper) is the hardest thing in the trade to hide. 4 by 8 is the better pick in stairwells, small bathrooms and anywhere two people can’t swing a 77 pound board.
Run the numbers on a 12 by 12 room with an 8 foot ceiling. In 4 by 12 the walls take 8 sheets. That leaves 48 feet of tapered seam and no butt joints at all. In 4 by 8 they take 12 sheets and leave the same 48 feet of tapered seam plus 32 feet of butt joint. Call it two-thirds more joint overall, and the extra is entirely the hard kind.
The price gap per square foot is modest but real, and it moves constantly. Reckon on roughly 40 to 52 cents for 4 by 8 against 53 to 67 for 4 by 12 (US home-center pricing). What you buy back is two-thirds less joint to tape, coat and sand.
Weight is the real limit. Standard half-inch runs about 1.6 pounds a square foot, so 51 pounds as a 4 by 8 and 77 as a 4 by 12, though some brands list their 4 by 12 nearer 82.

Can one person hang 4x12 drywall?
